Library Card Month vs. Star Trek

The "new year" begins! Most of still think of fall as a new time in our lives. Children, and some adults, go back to school. Organizations often ramp up with new activities and events. The hot, lazy days of summer are over and the very air carries a new promise of "something coming!"

So it is here at the library! We are starting out September with a new promotion - it is Library Card month! If you don't have a card, hurry in and get one. Not convinced that you need a library card? Stop and pick up a little slip that will fill you in on all that our library has to offer. Better yet, take yourself on a tour of our building and look in all the nooks and crannies. Best, ask a librarian to tell you about us!

We welcome back our favorite on-going programs: Evening Book Club, Lego Club (for kids), Reading to Abby (our therapy dog), Tech Tuesday (featuring an expanded time frame), Stitchin' Time (now meeting on 3rd Thursdays), and of course, our wonderful story time offerings for little ones from newborn through age 6! Consider giving one or more of these a try!

We are starting a new program that we hope you will like! Chess Club will meet weekly on Thursdays from 6 - 7:45 p.m. beginning on Sept. 22. If you'd like to learn how to play or improve your game, please register at the main desk. Lessons will run the first half hour of the sessions, then learners will join in on the open play. If you are confident in your skill, just come at 6 p.m. to play!

The library continues in its tradition of featuring local artists. This month we have wonderfully colorful paintings by Amy Shaw and beautifully textured ceramics by Dave Cicero. Both our art wall gallery and display cases in the McBroom Community Room are worth a look!

How does Star Trek fit in? Fifty years ago on Sept. 8 the first episode of the soon-to-be iconic TV series was aired and history was made! So just for fun, we have a display of Trek-inspired items, and hopefully our staff will join in the fun by wearing "official" Trek insignia badges. At the end of month we will offer a special program by a person who has written about Star Trek and can provide some fun insights into the phenomena!

So what can your library offer you? Come in and see, get a card if you need one, and make sure to sign up for our e-mail newsletters so you can keep informed on what we have ready for you! "Like" us on Facebook and watch for updates, information and fun bits on themes tied into our library.

Live long and prosper! And boldly go to the library!
